CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Dec. 26, 2018) – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP), West Virginia State Parks, and West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) are partnering with Charleston’s Capitol Market to collect Christmas trees to be repurposed as fish habitat in lakes across the state.
The event is set for Saturday, Jan. 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Capitol Market located at 800 Smith Street in Charleston.
There is no limit to the number of trees each person can donate, and there is no size limit. Prior to being donated all the decorations – including artificial snow, lights, tinsel, and bulbs – must be removed from the tree. The trees must be real trees, and the branches must be attached to the tree; individual branches of trees cannot be accepted.
There will be staff at the Capitol Market to help unload trees from cars and trucks. Those who donate trees can register for prizes, which include three one-night stays at Chief Logan State Park and a $25 gift certificate to Capitol Market. Each person who donates a tree will receive a free gift, courtesy WVDEP-REAP.
The donated trees will be used as fish habitat in Beech Fork Lake, Big Ditch Lake, Burnsville Lake, Cheat Lake, East Lynn Lake, Plum Orchard Lake, Stonecoal Lake, and Stonewall Jackson Lake.
