WVDEP’s Watershed Improvement Branch Announces Awarding of $96,000 in Grant Funding

 

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Aug. 15, 2018) – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s (WVDEP) Watershed Improvement Branch recently announced the recipients of this year’s Additional Grant Opportunities (AGO). This year’s recipients were awarded $96,000 in §319 funding, which supports short-term projects, typically two years, with non-point source (NPS) focus. 

This year’s award recipients covered a wide variety of NPS problems and issues, and featured projects such as volunteer monitoring, capacity building, targeted water quality analysis, fisheries and benthic studies in priority areas, as well as outreach and education.

The award recipients include:

• WV Rivers Coalition: $5,000: The funding will be used for building capacity for watershed groups;

• WV Rivers Coalition: $10,000: The funding will be used for the West Virginia water quality monitoring program;

• Friends of Blackwater: $9,000: The funding will be used for the targeted analysis of Beaver Creek acid mine drainage;

• Guardians of the West Fork: $9,000: The funding will be used for a study of Lambert’s Run; 
 
• WVU Research Corporation: $12,000: The funding will be used for fisheries in a treated tributary affected by acid mine drainage;

• Piney Creek Watershed Association: $4,000: The funding will be used for water sampling and educational support;

• Morris Creek Watershed Association: $5,000: The funding will be used for the Morris Creek Lavender Patch;

• Friends of Deckers Creek: $12,000: The funding will be used for evaluating the impact of coliform bacteria;

• Friends of the Cheat: $9,000: The funding will be used for the State of the Watershed 2018;

• WV Conservation Agency: $21,000: The funding will be used for the Sleepy Creek septic mini-grant.
