Kanawha River Cleanup

Great Kanawha River Cleanup

The REAP program’s Kanawha River Cleanup was created with the objective of increasing public awareness on the consequences of stream littering and removing solid waste from the Kanawha River. The event offers volunteers the opportunity to take charge of their own environment by making a positive effort to create a cleaner, more aesthetic place in which to live, and improve our state’s water quality. Individuals, families, churches, businesses, schools, civic organizations, government agencies, scouting groups, fraternities, communities, and watershed groups are all eligible to participate.

The traditional format of the Kanawha River Cleanup has changed. This year, participating groups can conduct a cleanup on any public or private (with prior approval) banks of the Kanawha River in Mason, Putnam, Kanawha, or Fayette Counties during the months of September and October. As in past years, any group conducting a cleanup will be eligible to receive bags and gloves, as well as hauling and disposal of any waste and tires collected. In order to register, please submit the online application found on this webpage. For more information about participating in the Kanawha River Cleanup, call 1-800-322-5530 or contact Chris Cartwright at christopher.j.cartwright@wv.gov.

Ohio River Sweep

Ohio River Sweep Cleanup

The West Virginia Make It Shine Program is happy to be a co-sponsor of the largest cleanup of its kind in the United States. Historically, on the third Saturday of every June, this year communities along the Ohio River pitch in to clean the river and its banks of litter. For more information on participating in the Ohio River Sweep, call 1-800-322-5530.
