Note: Before using your test kit, be sure to read its instruction manual and all related
safety precautions. Also, review the material safety data sheets (MSDS) for the chemicals included with the
kit. MSDS for all LaMotte kits are available for download from the LaMotte website.
All the waste generated by LaMotte test kits (not including bacteria tests) may be poured down the drain
with the water running (this dilutes the waste). The only time the waste may not be disposed of in this
manner is if the waste generated is from 30 or more tests for a single parameter. For example, if 30
students use the LaMotte kit to test the DO levels of a stream; the waste cannot be poured down the drain. A
waste management facility should be contacted to determine the correct method of disposal.
If 10 students test for pH, 10 students test for nitrates and 10 students test for dissolved oxygen, the
waste generated can be disposed of down the drain with the water running. When the tests are completed in
the field, always carry a sturdy plastic (no-leak) waste container. Pour all of the waste into the container
and dispose of it properly. Most of the waste can be poured into the same container, but in some cases this
may not be the case. Always refer to the MSDS. Do not pour the waste back into the stream or on
the ground!
