WVDEP’s REAP announces more than $84,000 in Litter Control grants

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (July 28, 2021) – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s (WVDEP) Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP) program announced the recipients of its Litter Control Matching Grants, Wednesday.
 
The grants were awarded to county solid waste authorities, county commissions, and municipalities. 25 applicants were approved for amounts totaling $84,350.
 
Funding for the litter control program is generated from 50% of civil penalties imposed upon persons convicted of unlawful disposal of litter and state agency facility recycling revenue pursuant to West Virginia Code §22-15A-4 and §22-15A-5.
 
The grant recipients are:
 
Bancroft, Town of: $1,500.00
The funding will be used to assist with a town cleanup event.     
 
Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used for a county-wide, anti-litter billboard campaign.
 
Brooke County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00           
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County Litter Control Officer.
  
Clendenin, Town of: $2,500.00
The funding will be used for litter receptacles and liners for the town. 

Dunbar, City of: $5,000.00
The funding will be used for demolition of a dilapidated structure within the city.
 
Gauley Bridge, Town of: $2,825.00
The funding will be used to assist with a town cleanup event.
 
Hancock County Solid Waste Authority: $4,000.00                                     
The funding will be used to assist with a county cleanup event. 
 
Harrison County Commission: $2,500.00
The funding will be used for litter receptacles for the county. 
 
Jackson County Solid Waste Authority: $4,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with a county cleanup event.                
 
Kanawha County Commission: $4,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with the county’s six cleanup events.  
 
Kingwood, City of: $5,000.00
The funding will be used for demolition of a dilapidated structure within the city. 
 
Mannington, City of: $1,630.00
The funding will be used for litter receptacles and liners for the town. 
 
Mason County Solid Waste Authority: $2,500.00
The funding will be used to assist with a county cleanup event. 
 
McDowell County Commission: $5,000.00
The funding will be used for wages and fuel for equipment to raze structures throughout
the county. 
 
Mingo County Commission: $5,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the county’s litter control crew.

Parkersburg, City of: $3,000.00
The funding will be used for recycling bins for the city. 
 
Preston County Solid Waste Authority: $3,250.00
The funding will be used to assist with fuel for the Litter Control Officer’s vehicle and advertisements for the county's litter control and recycling programs. 
 
Putnam County Solid Waste Authority: $5,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County Litter Control Officer.
 
Randolph County Commission: $4,455.00
The funding will be used to assist with cleaning up targeted areas around the county and trash can locks.
 
Terra Alta, Town of: $500.00
The funding will be used for an educational anti-litter campaign for the town. 
 
Webster County Solid Waste Authority: $5,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County Litter Control Officer.
 
Wetzel County Solid Waste Authority: $5,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County Litter Control Officer. 
 
White Hall, Town of: $2,510.00
The funding will be used to assist with a town cleanup event.     
 
Wood County Solid Waste Authority: $2,180.00
The funding will be used to purchase supplies for volunteer cleanup events throughout the county. 

Wyoming County Solid Waste Authority: $4,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with the Litter Control Officer's uniforms and vehicle expenses.


REAP, whose new motto is ‘Keeping WV Clean and Green,’ was created in 2005 and strives to clean up West Virginia and rid the state of litter. The program empowers citizens to take ownership of their communities by providing technical, financial, and resource assistance in cleanup and recycling efforts.
