CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Nov. 6, 2019) – The West
Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) recently recognized four
educators as “Environmental Teachers of the Year” and announced the recipients
of the “Clean County and Clean Community Awards.”
The awards were presented at the Annual
Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP)/Association of West Virginia
Solid Waste Authorities Joint Conference at Canaan Valley Resort State Park.
ENVIRONMENTAL TEACHERS OF THE YEAR
The Environmental Teachers of the Year are:

Elementary:
Meghan Salter and Ann Henry (cowinners for collaborative effort), Martha
Elementary in Cabell County
·
Intermediate:
Stephanie Diamond, Charles Town Middle School in Jefferson County
·
High
School: Brittany Bauer, Wyoming East High School in Wyoming County
Each award winner will receive a $500 personal
award and a $1,000 award to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
(STEM) education in the classroom.
CLEAN COUNTY AWARD
The two counties recognized as Clean Counties
are:

Greenbrier
County Solid Waste Authority ($2,000 first place award)
·
Berkeley
County Solid Waste Authority ($1,000 second place award)
CLEAN COMMUNITY AWARD
The five municipalities recognized as Clean
Communities are:
·
Montgomery,
Fayette/Kanawha County ($500 grand prize)
·
Beech
Bottom, Brooke County
·
Hamlin,
Lincoln County
·
New
Cumberland, Hancock County
·
Ravenswood,
Jackson County
The grand prize winners also received a glass
award, while other winners received signs designating their community as a Make
It Shine Clean Community.
