WVDEP's REAP awards over $52,000 in litter control grants

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s (WVDEP) Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP) program announced the recipients of its Litter Control matching grants, Friday.
 
Grants totaling $52,550 were awarded to 25 county solid waste authorities, county commissions, and municipalities.
 
Funding for the litter control program is generated from 50% of civil penalties imposed upon persons convicted of unlawful disposal of litter and state agency facility recycling revenue pursuant to West Virginia Code §22-15A-4 and §22-15A-5.
 
The grant recipients are:

Bancroft, Town of: $1,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with hauling and disposal fees for a town cleanup event.     

Beckley Sanitary Board, City of: $3,750.00    
The funding will be used to assist with the purchase of an in-stream litter catchment device.

Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with an anti-litter advertising campaign for the county.

Brooke County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00                                  
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County’s litter control officer. 
 
Buffalo, Town of: $1,500.00
The funding will be used to assist with the purchase of litter cleanup supplies.

Gilmer County Commission: $4,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County’s litter control supervisor and laborer.

Hancock County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00                               
The funding will be used to assist with transportation and disposal fees for county cleanup events. 
 
Jackson County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00    
The funding will be used to assist with disposal fees for a county cleanup event.              
 
Kanawha County Commission: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with disposal fees for county cleanup events.

Keystone, City of: $2,400.00
The funding will be used to assist with the purchase of litter receptacles and roll-off/disposal fees for a town cleanup event.                                                                                                                                                   

Logan County Commission: $2,500.00    
The funding will be used to assist with wages and vehicle maintenance for law enforcement personnel performing duties related to litter control. 

Mason County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with labor, transportation, and disposal fees for a county cleanup event. 

McDowell County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County’s litter control officer.                     

Mercer County Commission: $2,500.00
The funding will be used to assist with the purchase of litter cleanup supplies for county cleanup events.                     

Milton, City of: $2,400.00
The funding will be used to assist with dumpster fees for a town cleanup event.

Mingo County Commission: $2,500.00
The funding will be used to assist with wages for law enforcement personnel performing duties related to litter control. 
  
Ohio County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00                   
The funding will be used to assist with an anti-litter advertising campaign for the county.

Poca, Town of: $1,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with hauling and disposal fees for a town cleanup event.  
  
Preston County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with fuel for the litter control officer’s vehicle. 

Putnam County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County’s litter control officer.

Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with the purchase of a trailer and/or fuel for the county’s litter control program.  

Wetzel County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00    
The funding will be used to assist with wages for the County’s litter control officer. 

White Hall, Town of: $1,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with hauling and disposal fees for a town cleanup event. 

Wood County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with the purchase of litter cleanup supplies. 

Wyoming County Solid Waste Authority: $2,000.00
The funding will be used to assist with fuel, tires, and maintenance for the litter control officer’s vehicle.

REAP, whose motto is ‘Keeping WV Clean and Green,’ was created in 2005 and strives to clean up West Virginia and rid the state of litter. The program empowers citizens to take ownership of their communities by providing technical, financial, and resource assistance in cleanup and recycling efforts.
